Realising the potential of data and artificial intelligence to improve NHS services
We’re exploring ways to realise the potential of digital innovation to change patients’ lives. Using the latest technology we aim to help clinicians better understand and manage conditions and treatments, making healthcare more efficient and effective while ensuring that patient data remains secure and trusted by the public.
We’ll do this by:
- Partnering with tech and healthcare companies to create AI-powered tools for better diagnosis and treatment, ensuring responsible use of AI.
- Working with universities and NHS colleagues to develop a secure data environment for the South West.
- Engaging with the public to build confidence in digital healthcare solutions while ensuring patient information is handled safely and ethically
Harnessing AI and data to revolutionise NHS healthcare
The NHS deals with a huge amount of patient data, but it isn’t always easy to access or used effectively. In addition, our ageing population presents increasingly complex and interacting health problems for health and care services. AI has the potential to transform healthcare and systems by enabling doctors to monitor patient health trends, predict medical conditions, and deliver earlier diagnoses with more personalised treatments. By better managing resources we can contribute to environmental sustainability.
Ensuring ethical and secure AI in healthcare
Addressing the ethical and security challenges of AI is crucial to making digital innovations work for everyone involved. We’re putting people at the centre of our research by involving patients and the public in the co-design of our data driven projects. And we’re part of the NHS Secure Data Environment, a data and research analysis platform which makes routinely collected clinical data available to approved researchers. We also work with industry to responsibly develop new medical technologies.
A smarter, more connected NHS
Our work builds on our investment in Epic, an electronic patient record system which consolidates healthcare data, improving care coordination and patient access to information. By integrating AI with real-world NHS data, we aim to create a smarter, more connected, and more efficient healthcare system for the future.
