A project led by the University of Exeter, in partnership with the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Sustainable Innovation and Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been shortlisted in the Health Tech Awards 2026 in the Best Use of Digital and Data for NHS Trusts category.
The HELP (High or Elevated Level of Platelets) Flag Pathway is helping to support earlier cancer detection through the innovative use of routine blood tests. The project uses an algorithm that analyses blood test results and applies personalised, age and sex-adjusted thresholds to identify patients who may be at increased risk of cancer.
When a patient’s results meet HELP Flag criteria, a digital alert is returned directly to GP clinical systems, prompting consideration of further monitoring, investigation or referral where appropriate.
The pathway is currently live across 60 GP practices in Devon and has recently expanded to Liverpool. By integrating directly into existing NHS systems, HELP Flag is helping clinicians identify patients who may benefit from earlier assessment, supporting faster diagnosis and improving patient outcomes.
The shortlist recognises the collaborative efforts of researchers, clinicians and innovators working to harness digital technology and data to improve patient care and support earlier cancer diagnosis.
