Professor Mike Spiro

Professor Michael Spiro is the Director of the NIHR-funded HealthTech Research Centre in Sustainable Innovation and a Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. He is a Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at The Royal Free Hospital, London (University College London Partners) and is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter.

His research interests include Enhanced Recovery after Liver Transplantation (ERAS), reducing complications in liver transplant recipients, living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) safety, LDLT Registry Data and clotting changes in septic ITU patients. 

Mike is also leading a national workstream with NHSBT to develop a national ERAS pathway for Liver Transplantation.  He is the current Vice-Chair of the International Liver Transplantation Anesthesia and Critical Care Committee, and will be Chair from May 2025. Outside of work, Mike enjoys innovation, fly-fishing, DIY projects, and spending time with his family.
